10" toms

I guess Steve Gadd started the revolution, but it seems that the standard drum set configuration includes a 10" and a 12" mounted tom on the bass drum. Years ago, it was a 12" and a 13". I myself have been using a 10" and 12" for about 17 years.

But now I'm thinking of going back to a 12" and 13". It will probably permit (or demand) a tighter tensioning and a slightly bigger and rounder tone, but to tell you the truth, I can't recall.

Who among us is using 12" and 13" toms mounted over their kick? As for depth, I would go with 8" and 9". I already have a 10, 12, 14 setup, so I'm looking to just get a new 13 x 9 and swap out the 10.

I think that the 10" tom is always the sweetest sounding tom on a kit (and easiest to tune!). It can often go nice, low and punchy or high and ringy... a diverse size.

12" and 13" toms are way to old school classic rock to me. I opt for 10,12,14 or 10,12,16. I like 8" toms a lot too.

What kind of music are you playing?

One thing sure is that these last year it's very hip to have just one 12" tom on his bass drums (or on snare drums stand) and one or two floor tom...

I'm not fan, surely because it's hip...

But "Tain" Watts play 12" and 13" on his bass drums, it's awesome !!!

Maybe that JR plays 13" and 14" ?
I don't remember...

But finaly I think that sometimes for some pop stuff it's better to have a 12" tom instead of the 10" who is my favorite anyway.

The nice thing about 12 and 13 is that you can tension them tighter and still get a nice tone/pitch. A 10 tensioned tightly sounds a bit like a bongo to me.

The problem now is that Yamaha doesn't stock the regular absolute drums anymore, just the nouveau. So it means a 3 to 4 month wait to order a tom. [img]frown.gif[/img] Hoe lawe is that? I hate those nouveaus lugs...(no offense to anyone who has them). I guess I'm a purist in that regard.

I find the idea to let 3" between the toms pretty clever.

I think that Steve Jordan used a 10" tom very early in the 80's, but he was hanging with Gadd...
Now his back with a 12" since longtime now with a great high pitch on it !!!
